Noted authority and collector Phil Shrimpton says of this particular year: "We believe 1953 is one of, if not the, most iconic years for The Beano. Leo Baxendale began his Beano career by introducing Little Plum and Minnie the Minx - this would pave the way for The Bash Street Kids in very early 1954 - two classic characters. It also saw the first appearance of Ken Reid s Roger the Dodger, another household name, as well as Walter the Softy and General Jumbo!"
#597 Christmas issue will easily fetch twice even as much as three times the value of a 'regular' 1953 issue.
