A major issue that has lost some of its prestige in recent years to Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27.
The title becomes Marvel Mystery Comics from #2 onwards.
This was a comic that suffered major restoration to existing copies 15-20 years ago when it was considered the most valuable comic.
Feb 2022: interesting to see the Pay Copy of Marvel Comics #1 is back on the market and re-slabbed in a new holder by CGC. Shame to lose that nice Version 1 original holder. The Pay Copy is a unique copy in that it has payment annotations made by publisher Lloyd Jacquet to artists who contributed to the issue. It's also the 2nd Highest Graded copy after a fairly recent 9.4 which I suspect is a pressed-up copy.
It previously sold in Jan 2006 for $201,250 through Heritage Auctions.
Sep 2022: The Kanas City copy CGC 6.0 sold for $729,000 by Comic Connect.
