In the late Eighties, DC began publishing Doc Savage stories and began witha try-out Mini-Series after Savage had previously had his comics published at Marvel. O'Neil decided to age Savage and his world and try a more deconstructionist approach, with a mixed reaction.
The series was eventually launched as this ongoing title the following year again written by O'Neil before Mike W. Barr took over, lasting for 24 issues and one Annual.
