BEANO COMIC (THE)

Issue: 1 (1938)
From: 1938 To: 1938

2010: There are about 25 known copies at the time of writing in July 2010. It's the 1st appearance Lord Snooty by Dudley Watkins. Note that these are very approximate guide prices and should not be taken as exact values. Sales are constantly monitored and prices updated. If a FINE copy ever surfaced onto the market, a reasonable starting point would be £15,000 and it would probably sell for a lot more!

This is such a difficult comic to value. Copies surface on rare occasions in the Poor, Fair, Good or Very Good grade and it depends on who wants one at the time of sale/auction and what money is around. The gap between a VG copy and a VG+ one is growing I think. The value curve climbs steeply for a VG/Fine and a genuine Fine copy would put it right up there as 'best copy in existence' so should fetch somewhere in the £15,000 in my opinion.

I am however geting the feeling that the excitement for this comic is waning a little unless a spectacular copy turns up. A recent sale of a VG copy with some cover tears at £3,911 including a Buyer's Premium of 10% at Comic Book Postal Auctions in Spring 2014 seemed a bit on the lower end of expectation side. Am I wrong to think that?

Apr 2014 and a Good copy with a significant tear at the top margin leading into a one inch piece out of the letter E in Beano fetched £3,499.99 on ebay UK. Another great find by philcomics.

Sep 2022: Malcolm Phillips at Comic Book Postal Auctions achieved a great sale of a Beano #1 for £15,00 and the news made the national press. A decent copy in about GVG with some noticeable wear on the right hand side and light tan pages. A one-off or the start of a new interest in this iconic British comic?
