Fast becoming one of the Holy Grails of British
comics, this was the first Summer Special which led to a tradition of
Dandy and Beano Summer Specials from 1964 and then a whole host of other titles
thereafter. It's not quite as scarce as I once thought it was. Low grade copies do show
up on eBay UK from time to time, about 2 or 3 a year at the moment. Anything
above a Fine copy though and you've got yourself a goldmine. But true Fine mind you.
Get practising on that grading! The last significant sales on eBay UK were £523
for a VG copy in Oct 2007 and £112 for a Poor/Fair copy with detached cover and
half the back cover missing! Very accurately described by vendor phil-comics. My values I think are conservative in the upper echelons. Frankly if someone wanted to pay £2,500 for Near Mint, it's still
probably a bargain! What's that phrase again? "A comic is only worth what
someone is prepared to pay for it". Repeat after me....
Even a very low grade copy still carries significant value! In Feb 2010 a Poor/Fair copy with the spine practically spilt in two so that the front and back covers were alsmost separated still fetched £205. Nicely and honestly described by the vendor.
24th Aug 2010. I've just been watching the bidding on the best copy that I have ever seen offered at auction. Very accurately graded as a Fine, very flat with bright colours. After 27 bids it eventually reached £1,371 with the winning bidder probably putting in more - £1,500? Very exciting!
